Music Scholarships
Music
Scholarships are available for any talented musician regardless of academic
major. All trombone, euphonium, and tuba students who wish to be considered
for a music scholarship must audition for Dr. Smith. In addition to music scholarships, many Luther students
are also eligible to receive academic
scholarships.
General Music Scholarships
Weston
Noble Music Scholarship (Talent Award)
This
is a renewable scholarship that can range from $3,000 to $16,000 over four years.
This scholarship is available for all students regardless of major and is based
on audition.
Music
Excellence Award
This award is reseved for a limited number
of exceptional musicians regardless of major. This scholarship is added to the Weston Noble Scholarship, which makes the total value of these two scholarships at $20,000 over four years.
Music
Lesson Scholarship
In addition to the Weston Noble Music Scholarship and the Music Excellence Award, students can also receive a Music Lesson Scholarship. Music Lesson Scholarships are designed to cover the cost of a private lesson for students. Incoming students, regardless of major, may receive this scholarship to develop their musical ability through individual and group instruction during their first year at Luther College. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who declare themselves music majors may receive one music lesson scholarship each semester, with a maximum total of seven semesters of scholarships.
Ziemer
Scholarship (Tenor trombone only)
The winner of the Ziemer audition can receive an additional $500 scholarship and
serves as principal trombone of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra
(and Chamber Orchestra as needed) for the academic year.

Music Scholarships
Special
gifts in direct support of Luther's program of financial assistance
have established a number of scholarships for Luther students. Recipients
of these scholarships are selected by the faculty and the office of
student financial planning. The following list indicates the
scholarships and the condition of eligibility.
Scholarships
currently available to students in Music:
The
Otto and Esther Austin Family Scholarship, established by the
family in memory of their parents, Otto and Esther Austin, for sophomore,
junior, or senior students with music interests.
The Helen Astrid Barton Memorial Scholarship, established
through the estate of Helen Astrid Barton to be awarded to students
involved in the music program who can show evidence of need for financial
assistance.
The Hugh Conkey Music Scholarship, established through
his last will and testament to provide scholarships for students with
a demonstrated need for financial assistance, with preference given
to students enrolled in courses in piano and applied music.
The John Dewey Memorial Music Scholarship, established
by his parents in memory of John Dewey ('57) to be awarded to seniors
engaged in the study of voice and violin.
The Tanya Marie Enstad Memorial Scholarship, established
by her parents, O.L. and Segrid Enstad, awarded with preference given
to assist any handicapped or disadvantaged students, or to students
interested in music.
The Virginia Baker Faldet Memorial Scholarship, established
by friends and family in loving memory of Virginia Baker Faldet in recognition
of her years of service to Luther College. Awards shall be made to qualified
students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance, with
preference given to students interested in music and who live in northeast
Iowa.
The Forde-Preus Music Scholarship, originally established
to honor Magdalene Forde Preus, the wife of Luther's fourth president,
O.J.H. Preus, who served from 1932 to 1948. The scholarship name was
changed in 1994 to honor not only Magdalene Forde Preus' love of music,
but to honor other Forde and Preus family members who also have musical
interests. This scholarship shall be awarded to students with an interest
in music.
The Abner A. and Olivia C. Hendrickson Memorial Music Scholarship,
to be awarded to students majoring in music who can show evidence of
need for financial assistance, with preference given to students who
are residents of Allamakee, Howard, or Winneshiek counties in Iowa.
The Sigvart A. Hofland Memorial Scholarship, established in
memory of Dr. Sigvart A. Hofland, formerly professor of music and composer-in-residence
at the college, to be awarded to music majors in need of financial assistance.
The James O. and Katharine Holum Music Scholarship, established
to honor the memory of Rev. James O. Holum and his daughter Katharine,
to be awarded to students with financial need majoring in music or participating
significantly in music organizations listed in the college catalog.
The Clara Hoyt Scholarship, established in recognition of the
service of the late Miss Clara Hoyt, formerly assistant professor of
music at the college, to be awarded to needy and deserving music majors.
The Jenson Music Scholarship, established by Martin and Avis
Jenson, to be awarded to upperclass students, based upon musical and
academic ability.
The Dr. Marian I. Jordalen Scholarship, established in recognition
of the work of Dr. Jordalen, former head of the music department, Sacramento
State College, California, to be awarded to music majors with financial
need.
The Linka C. Kempf Music Scholarship, to be awarded to qualified
music students who can show evidence of need for financial assistance.
The Kristi Buckneberg Kuh Memorial Scholarship, established
by family and friends ot honor the memory of Kristi Buckneberg Kuh,
a 1969 Luther College music graduate, to be used to provide voice lessons.
The Donald Larson Memorial Scholarship, established in memory
of Donald Larson, for many years a member of the music faculty at the
college, to be awarded to music majors, based on financial need.
The Willard and Yvonne Linnevold Scholarship in Music, established
by Drs. Rebecca (Linnevold) and Robert Shaw to honor Willard and Yvonne
Linnevold for their lifetime commitment to music, higher education,
and Luther College, to be awarded to music majors.
The Mildred L. Lund Scholarship, established by Orville Running
in honor of his wife, Midred, to be awarded to qualified students with
preference given to female students majoring in vocal music.
The Ellen Knudson Mather Memorial Scholarship, established
by Dr. and Mrs. Fredrich Lord in memory of Ellen Knudson Mather, to
be awarded to outstanding music students in need of financial assistance.
The Gladys Moen Music Scholarship, established by Robert C.
Moen in memory of his wife, to be awarded to outstanding students majoring
in music, with preference to be given to those students majoring in
vocal music.
The Kathryn Ulvilden Moen Endowed Fund for Organ and Church Music,
to be awarded to one or more outstanding organ students who are prospects
for a career in performance or church music. If no organ students qualify,
top cello students should be chosen.
The Solveig Lee Nelson Music Scholarship, established by the
family and friends of Slveig Lee Nelson to honor her memory, awarded
without regard to financial need and with preference given to women
who possess the talent for playing stringed instruments.
The Njus-Sanderson Music Scholarship, awarded to students with
financial need who have demonstrated leadership qualities and have an
interest in music. Preference shall be given to students from rural
areas in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Illinois.
The Weston Noble Music Scholarship, to be awarded to students
with demonstrated interest and ability in music.
The Franklin C. and Hildred O. Kronlokken Norman Scholarship,
to be awarded to qualified students interested in music who show evidence
of need for financial assistance with preference given to students interested
in vocal performance.
The Presser Scholarship, to be awarded to an outstanding student
majoring in music, at or after the end of his or her junior year.
The Dennis R. Rathjen Memorial Music Scholarship, established
in memory of Dennis R. Rathjen ('65), by his parents, to be awarded
to music majors.
The Dr. Carlo A. Sperati Memorial Music Scholarship, established
by alumni of Luther's bands of 1914 and 1936, to be awarded to music
majors who are members of the Luther College Concert Band.
The Torgerson Endowed Scholarship, established to commemorate
the relationship of the family to the college since its founding, endows
the principal first violin (concertmaster) chair of the Luther College
Symphony Orchestra selected annually through audition by the music department
faculty.
The Carol Ulvilden Scholarship, established to provide awards
for students who are in good academic standing, can show evidence of
financial need, and have an interest in music and related subjects.
The Arthur M. Wisness Music Scholarship, established in memory
of Arthur M. Wisness ('14), to be awarded to students majoring in music.

I would encourage all prospective students to come sit in with the Trombone Choir, Trombone Ensemble, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, or Concert Band. To set up a visit, you may contact me or the Admissions Office. I would highly recommend propsective students to audition audition during the
Christmas at Luther Visit Day or Dorian festivals..
If the distance you live from Luther makes auditioning on campus
impractical, the music faculty will accept a high-quality CD, cassette or
video recording of a solo, etude, or recital. In any case, scholarship
candidates should not pass up opportunities to audition.
Priority
Deadline for Auditions - March 1, 2010.
This date can be extended
under certain circumstances. Please contact me or the Admissions Office if you have any concerns. If
you can't make it to the Luther Campus before the audition deadline,
you may still be eligible to receive music scholarships. Send a cassette
tape, video tape, CD, or DVD of a recent performance to Dr. Smith.
Audition
Materials - you may perform any solo (with or without accompaniment)
or etude(s) that best demonstrates your abilities.

Dr. Michael Smith is currently Associate Professor of
Low Brass at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he teaches applied
low brass and low brass methods, coaches small brass ensembles, and conducts
the Luther College Trombone Ensemble, and the 39 member Luther
College Trombone Choir.
He holds a Bachelor of Music from Stephen
F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, a Master of Music
Education from McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana,
and a doctorate in Trombone Performance and Literature from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Prior to his appointment at Luther College, Dr. Smith
taught at Millikin University, Knox College, and at the University of
Illinois as the head teaching assistant in the trombone studio from
1996-1999. He has also taught at the Luther College Summer Dorian Camps
and the Illinois Summer Youth Music Trombone Camps at the University
of Illinois. He has been a guest clinician, soloist, and conductor at
the 2003 Georgia Honors Low Brass Choir at Valdosta State University
in Valdosta, GA, the 2002 Illinois Honors Trombone Choir in Chicago,
the 2001 Illinois Honors Trombone Choir held at the University of Illinois,
the 2000 Illinois Junior Trombone Symposium in Chicago, and was the
co-founder and conductor of the University of Illinois High School Laboratory
Trombone Choir. His awards from the University of Illinois include the
Robert Gray Trombone Award, the Albert A. Harding Award, and the Mark
H. Hindsley Award. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Alpha Chi, and
Phi Kappa Phi.
Dr. Smith was principal trombonist with the University
of Illinois Wind Symphony under the baton of James F. Keene. As a member
of the Illinois Wind Symphony, Dr. Smith went on tour to Great Britian
and was also a soloist with the ensemble. He was also a soloist and
made two U. S. tours with the University of Illinois Trombone Choir.
He has performed with the Longview Symphony Orchestra (TX), Rapides
Symphony Orchestra (LA), Lake Charles Symphony (LA), Illinois Symphony
Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera (IL), Decatur Symphony (IL), Danville
Symphony (IL), Cedar Rapids Symphony (IA), Champaign-Urbana Symphony (bass trombone), the Rochester
Symphony Orchestra (MN), Dorian Opera Theatre Orchestra (IA), the Dubuque
Symphony (IA), and the Cedar Falls-Waterloo Symphony (IA). Dr. Smith
is currently the bass trombonist with the Rochester
(MN) Symphony Orchestra. He also performed with Stuart
Dempster at the 1997 International Trombone Festival. His teachers include
J. Mark Thompson, William Rose, Nathaniel Brickens, and Elliot Chasanov.
Dr. Smith is married (Leslie) and has two sons - Ian (9) and Matthew "Gunner"
(6). Ian swims and plays soccer, baseball, and football, and recently earned his brown belt (7th belt) in American Karate. Ian also likes to read and play computer games. Gunner rececntly earned his green belt in American Karate, and also likes to swim and play soccer, baseball, and football. Gunner also enjoys reading and play video games.
